Joe Garagiola: A well-known baseball figure, Joe Garagiola
was signed at age 16 by the St. Louis Cardinals, playing for them for five years, including the 1946 World Series
championship year. He also played pro ball with the Chicago Cubs, the New York Giants, and the Pittsburgh Pirates.
After his retirement from pro baseball, Garagiola moved on to broadcasting. He announced for the Cardinals and the Yankees
before calling for NBC for almost 30 years. He also appeared on the "Today Show", occasionally guest-hosted the "Tonight Show",
hosted game shows, and hosted the Monday Night Baseball pregame show, "The Baseball World of Joe Garagiola".
In 1973 he won the Peabody Award, and entered the broadcaster's wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991. He has also been
given his own star on the St. Louis Walk of Fame.
Garagiola has written It's Anybody's Ballgame and Just Play Ball. In recent years, he has become an advocate against
the use of spit tobacco.
Garagiola makes his home in Phoenix, and the Fountain Hills Library Association was extremely fortunate to have him
join our 2008 Book Festival.
